Signing to a major label can have a drastic effect on the outcome of their career. The increased exposure and budget can put an artist in the mainstream to an extent that would more than likely not be possible. However, if the situation isn’t right a rapper can be shelved and a promising career ruined due to mitigating circumstances. When Rockie Fresh announced he was joining the MMG team and planned to release albums through Warner Bros. it seemed too soon. There was concern all of the talent and potential shown on his previous work wouldn’t get the shine it deserved within MMG. Rockie Fresh released Driving 88 in 2012 to widespread acclaim, but the project wasn’t as popular as Love. Live. A$AP. or Kush & Orange Juice and it didn’t have a radio smash like Trinidad James’ Don’t Be S.A.F.E., so there weren’t as many people familiar with him when he signed on with a major record label. Rather than turning into a carbon copy of Meek Mill or making some other drastic changes to his art, he went on a national tour off the strength of just a cosign and mixtapes and built himself a larger base. Maybach Music Group is undoubtedly one of the strongest teams in rap, but whether or not there was space for a Chicago MC who samples SBTRKT and Sampha remained to be seen. All of those concerns seem rudimentary after one listen to Electric Highway, the premiere mixtape from Rockie Fresh since joining Rick Ross and MMG.

“…a motherfucker could be in the club with a 700 thousand dollar chain on and pull up in a Bentley and all this, but you definitely do not have what I’m smoking on” -Berner
We got the chance to chat with Berner who is fresh off releasing Urban Farmer to mass appeal. We got to talk about the making of the tape, his appearance on the upcoming #2050 Tour, and it’s a Taylor Gang interview so of course we had to talk about the tree. Also we get the exclusive on how Berner went from an independent rapper and good friend of Wiz to a featured artist on his Taylor Gang imprint. The 2050 tour is coming to OKC November 19th so grab those tickets while you can and if you still haven’t, grab Berner’s mixtape Urban Farmer here Read the interview after the jump.

When Cudi tweeted that earlier today I got chills. Since A Kid Named Cudi dropped in 2008 we’ve seen Cudi gradually become less interested with rapping than making the music he wants. While there have been no complaints since, hearing him rap again is something we’re excited about. Check out this freebie Complex just let loose titled ‘King Wizard’ and produced by Cudi as well. Indicud can’t come soon enough.

Urban Farmer, the first release from Berner as a Taylor Gang member is here. Those familiar with Taylor Gang will realize Berner has been around, but his first foray into the music industry is quite the project. This isn’t “posse struggle music” that other camps would force down your throat, it’s actually a well rounded mixtape that’s deserving of heavy rotation. The features include Taylor Gang artists Wiz Khalifa, Lola Monroe and Juicy J as well as Currensy, Styles P, Bei Maejor and more. Download and tracklist after the jump. Do that.
First the tracklist, now K.Dot wants to bless us with a leak as well? We’re all for it. This one features Dre and Kendrick going back and forth about their native city as Just Blaze crafts one of his usual grandiose beats, but this one feels distinctly west coast. Great record. Stream this all you want, but it’s not entering your iTunes until October 22nd. Support good music.
The tracklist for Kendrick Lamar’s major label debut album has been officially released now that the album is available for pre-order on iTunes. Only 12 tracks, but some pretty big features including Drake, Dr. Dre, and Anna Wise of Sonnymoon (whom we told you would be featured on the album back in February…how’d we know?) Full tracklist after the jump.
